  • Delta aircraft at gate connected to jet bridge, illustrating the role of an Airline Technical Representative during terminal operations and construction.

What is an Airline Technical Representative?

An Airline Technical Representative (ATR) advocates for an airline during an airport project.

This includes reviewing plans, attending construction meetings, coordinating with the airport, and ensuring the finished space works for airline operations, safety, and passenger flow.

  • Interior of airport terminal with directional signage and passengers, emphasizing the importance of Airline Technical Representatives in navigating design, construction, and operational readiness.

Why is an Airline Technical Representative necessary?

Airport development projects move fast - and without an Airline Technical Representative (ATR), an airline's needs can be unintentionally overlooked during design and construction.

For many projects – including gates, concourses, and ticket counters, the airlines are the end user of the facility. If the facility is designed in a manner that doesn’t adhere to airline safety standards, this can result in unexpected issues especially with the FAA’s requirement that airlines are required to have Safety Management Systems (SMS). The SMS of each airline will vary and can have different requirements for things like storing GSE, gate movements, and deicing.

An ATR serves as the airline’s voice and advocate, ensuring that:

Operational requirements are integrated into the design

Safety, efficiency, and maintainability are prioritized

Conflicts are resolved quickly between project teams and airline tech ops

Changes and decisions are communicated clearly and documented properly

Having an ATR at the table protects the project by ensuring that airline operational and safety requirements are included during planning and design – which significantly reduces impacts from change orders during construction which impact both the schedule and the budget. ATR involvement ensures the finished facility actually supports day-to-day operations from day one.
